Elizabeth Bias Cofield
(January 21, 1920 - October 23, 2009)
Dr. Elizabeth B. Cofield, age 89 of Raleigh, NC, peacefully departed this life on Friday, October 23, 2009 at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, MA.
She was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. John H. Bias.
Dr. Cofield received her education from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC, Hampton University, Hampton, VA, Columbia University, New York City and N.C. State University, Raleigh, NC and served as Professor of Education and Personnel Administrator for more than 40 years at Shaw University.
She was the first African-American elected to the Raleigh Board of Education and Wake County Board of Commissioners.
She was the widow of the late James E. Cofield, Sr. and is survived by two sons: James E. Cofield, Jr. and Juan M. Cofield (Julia); three grandchildren: Nicole D., Elissa and Alexis and her sister: Lillian B. Abron.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh, NC.
A Viewing will take place on Friday, October 30, 2009 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:45 P.M. followed by funeral services at 1:00 P.M. in the Boyd Chapel on the campus of Shaw University, Raleigh, NC.
Entombment will take place at Carolina Biblical Gardens, Raleigh, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elizabeth B. Cofield Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 320128, West Roxbury, MA 02132.
