The mortal life of Larry D. Hockaday, age 63 of Roanoke Rapids, NC, transitioned into eternal rest on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC.
Larry, a son of the late Lonnie Frazier Hockaday and Dottice Mills Hockaday, was born January 10, 1950 in Halifax County, NC.
He received his education through the Weldon City School Sytem and was a 1968 Graduate of Ralph J. Bunch High School.
Larry joined the Christian Fellowship of Smith Chapel Baptist Church, Halifax, NC.
After graduating, he enlisted into the United States Navy on March 19, 1969 serving during the Vietnam Era and was Honorably Discharged on March 17, 1971. He then enlisted in the United States Army on February 1, 1977 and served a four year tour of duty and received a second Honorable Discharge on January 28, 1980.
For a number of years, he was employed with Patch Rubber Company and worked with Clanton's Roadside Lawn Mower Company.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to Gloria Clanton and God blessed their union with three children: (twins) Jakell and Channell and Ashley.
Treasured memories will remain with his wife: Gloria C. Hockaday of the home; daughters: Ashley Hockaday of the home, Kimberly Sledge of Alexandria, VA and Marie Webb (Steven) of Garysburg, NC; two grandchildren: Pamela Sledge and Steven Webb; two great-grandchildren; his sisters: Lois Hockaday of Huntington Beach, CA and Ellen H. Brown (David) of Forestville, MD; his brothers: Glenn Hockaday of Tacoma, WA and Bobby Hockaday of Troy, NY; three aunts: Dezell Mallory of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Hazel Reid (Roy) of Troy, NY and Burnett Montague of Richmond, VA; his in-laws: Clementine Forehand, Melissa Bechhoefer (Arthur), Ellis Clanton and Jimmy Clanton, all of Rochester, NY, Mack Clanton and Olivia of Richmond, VA and Dr. Wilbur Daniel (Charmaine) of Weldon, NC; many nieces, nephews, a host of cousins, other relatives and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 12:00 Noon from the sanctuary of Smith Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Halifax, NC. The Pastor, Rev. Albert E. Clark, Sr. will preside and words of comfort will be given by his cousin, Rev. Jessie Leon Allen.
Mr. Hockaday will be laid to rest in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Weldon, NC.
THERE WILL BE NO VIEWING ON THURSDAY AT THE FUNERAL HOME.
Mr. Hockaday may be viewed on Friday from 11:00 to 12:00 Noon at the church.
