Mrs. Mamie E. Person, age 72 of Garysburg, NC, peacefully departed this life on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mamie, a daughter of the late George and Katie Bell Hardy Williams, was born August 20, 1939 in Northampton County, NC.
She received her education through the public schools of Northampton County. At age 16, she began working on the Dailey Farm to help care for her family.
At an early age she was baptized and joined Hills Chapel Baptist Church. Later in life, she became a member of Chapel Grove Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully until her illness.
On December 10, 1960, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Roger Person.
Anyone that knew Mamie, knew she loved singing and her gift was exercised through her membership with the G.E. Brown Chorus, Cecelia Walden Singers, Chapel Grove Gospel Choir and the Roanoke Chapel Gospel Choir; and she was also well known for her famous homemade biscuits.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband: Roger Lee Person of the home; her children: Curtis Williams, John Williams (Cynthia), Ethel Person and James R. Person, all of Garysburg, NC, Shelia Person of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Phyllis Williams (Ervin) of Garysburg, NC, Jerome Person (Alnita) of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Jessica Person of Garysburg, NC; step-son: Jasper Smallwood (Phyllis) of Petersburg, VA; a son-at-heart: Minister Melvin Ramsey of Garysburg, NC; twenty-seven grandchildren and forty-one great-grandchildren; two sisters: Odessa W. Melvin of Jackson, NC and Hazel Williams of Weldon, NC; two brothers: George Williams of Weldon, NC and Donnell Williams of Roanoke Rapids, NC; her aunt and uncle: Ethel Benjamin of Jackson, NC and Benny Burgwyn of Gumberry, NC; sister-in-law: Minnie Whitaker of Garysburg, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Homegoing Services will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 2:30 P.M. from the sanctuary of Chapel Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Garysburg, NC. Words of comfort will be offered by Rev. Dr. Franklin D. Williams, Jr.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
